Mindframe Media and Mental Health ProjectMindframe Media and Mental Health Project The Mindframe Media and Mental Health (MMMH) project is part of the Commonwealth Government Department of Health and Ageing's National Mindframe Media Initiative. The project aims to build a collaborative relationship with the Australian media, other media sources and mental health systems to enable a more accurate and sensitive portrayal of suicide and mental illness across all news media in Australia. The first phase of the project started in June 2002 with the Media Dissemination Project. For more information click here This project involved the dissemination and promotion of a resource for media professionals called Reporting Suicide and Mental Illness. This resource provides media professionals with current contacts, research sources, facts and statistics, and suggestions about issues to consider when reporting on these issues. The recently updated resource is available in both a print version and on-line at www.mindframe-media.info The second phase of the project was conducted between January 2004 and May 2006. The project was multi-faceted and conducted in partnership with a project consortium including the Australian Network for Promotion, Prevention and Early intervention for Mental Health (Auseinet), SANE Australia and two Indigenous consultants. The project consortium received funding from the Department of Health and Ageing to continue with a third phase of the Mindframe Media and Mental Health Project, which began 1 July 2006. The project continues to be advised by the National Media and Mental Health Group, which includes representatives from the Australian Press Council, FreeTV Australia, Commercial Radio Australia, the Australian Broadcasting Authority, the ABC, SBS, the Australian Writers’ Guild and various peak mental health and consumer groups. The support of this group has been integral in accessing and forming lasting relationships with a variety of media organisations.
