Mindframe Stage and Screen

The Commonwealth Government’s Mindframe National Media Initiative aims to encourage responsible, accurate and sensitive media representation of mental illness and suicide, and to advocate on behalf of community concerns relating to media depictions that stigmatise mental illness or promote self-harm.

As part of the Mindframe Initiative, a range of projects have been funded to enhance the media’s capacity to cover these issues responsibly, sensitively and accurately. Much of the focus of Mindframe has been on news media, however in 2006, Australian film and television was identified as an area of priority by the National Media & Mental Health Group, prompted by a number of studies considering the portrayal of suicide and mental illness in fictional film and television programs.

Mindframe Stage and Screen was originally funded for a 20-month period commencing in November 2006. Since then, the project has been given a second round of funding for the period mid-December 2008 - June 2009.  The project continues to be managed by the Hunter Institute of Mental Health, in partnership with the Australian Writers’ Guild Limited www.awg.com.au  and SANE Australia www.sane.org.

To date, the project has involved the development, dissemination, promotion and evaluation of resources for writers and other key stakeholders to assist in the appropriate portrayal of suicide and the crafting of realistic characters with a mental illness.  More details on the project can be found at www.mindframe-media.info
