Mental Health Promotion & Prevention Service (MHP&PS)

The Tamworth-based Mental Health Promotion and Prevention Service plays a key role in support for the development, implementation and evaluation of Promotion, Prevention and Early Intervention (PPEI) initiatives for mental Health specifically in the Northern region of Hunter New England Area Health Service.

The mission of the Mental Health Promotion and Prevention Service:

To build the capacity of individuals and communities to promote and maintain mental health

It achieves this by developing, promoting, supporting and enhancing mental health initiatives which:

Promote positive community and service provider attitudes towards mental illness and those affected by it
Promote social & emotional well-being in all members of the community
Enable people and communities to address priority mental health issues
Strengthen partnerships with consumers and carers
Improve community awareness of mental health and mental illness
Encourage access to mental health services
Strengthen knowledge of mental health issues and develop mental health promotion and prevention skills in health staff and other service providers

Network Achievement Report Jan to June 2008

This service also co-ordinates the Northern Region Area Mental Health Promotion Network. The function of the network is to assist individuals and organisations to work collaboratively on mental health promotion across the northern sector of HNEH.

The network achieves this through prioritising, increasing skills, enhancing ideas, providing support, sharing resources and information and building on our promotion and prevention in mental health. Network meetings are held every three months and anyone with an interest in Mental Health Promotion is invited to attend.
