Leadership for a better future

“We look forward to implementing this Strategic Plan in the years to come. Together we can build the capacity of all sectors and people to play an important role in mental health and the prevention of suicide.”

Jaelea Skehan, Director Hunter Institute of Mental Health

The Hunter Institute of Mental Health has developed an organisational Strategic Plan 2016–2020.

This plan comes at a time of significant national reform and global change for the mental health and suicide prevention sectors. The Australian community is interested in and engaged with mental health more than ever before and the time is right to capitalise and set a vision for mental health in Australia that involves not only the health sector, but all sectors and communities.

As an organisation we believe that all people have the right to and capacity for optimal mental health and wellbeing, and through prioritising prevention approaches, we can reduce the prevalence and impact of mental ill-health and suicide.

At its heart, investing in prevention and promotion approaches makes good sense in terms of increased productivity, reduced health and other costs, increased workforce and community participation and improved quality of life.

As a leading voice on the prevention of mental ill-health, prevention of suicide and the promotion of mental health wellbeing, this Strategic Plan sets the direction of our work for the next five years building on our expertise and maximising our strengths in leadership, building capability, innovation and research.

“Our 2016 – 2020 plan is ambitious, but achievable. It provides a clear statement of our purpose and our five strategic priorities that are founded on a set of core values and beliefs developed by our diverse and passionate team.”

Jaelea Skehan, Director Hunter Institute of Mental Health

Over the last 25 years, the Hunter Institute of Mental Health has built a reputation for delivering successful, evidence-based mental health and suicide prevention programs which have made a considerable contribution to the mental health and wellbeing of many people and communities across Australia.

We look forward to implementing this Strategic Plan in the years to come and thank the stakeholders and team members who have contributed to its development.

Together we can build the capacity of all sectors and people to play an important role in mental health and the prevention of suicide.
