Suicide Prevention Research
Suicide is a significant global issue. In Australia, the annual suicide rate has remained relatively stable for the past decade, however there are some concerns that the most recent statistics suggest that the rates may be rising.
Suicide prevention represents one of the priority research areas of the Hunter Institute of Mental Health.
The Hunter Institute has led suicide prevention research in a number of different areas, including suicide prevention program development, evaluation of suicide prevention services, and the development and evaluation of evidence-based recommendations for media on the safe and accurate portrayal of mental illness and suicide in Australian mass media.
Our research has involved a variety of stakeholders, including experts in the field of suicide prevention, service providers, those with lived experience of suicide, carers, and those bereaved by suicide.
